Bacon Reading Challenge 2023: At the Bacon Memorial District Library, 45 Vinewood Wyandotte. Pickup begins Saturday, Aug. 12. August: a “Hot” Book. Have you always wanted to participate in a Reading Challenge? Give our challenge a try! We’ll make it easy peasy for you. Every month is a new reading challenge and if you register every month, we’ll pick a book to meet that challenge. You can also pick up a challenge calendar and do it on your own. Southgate DDA Presents: A family-friendly concert with Matthew Ball – The Boogie Woogie Kid Piano & Song man. American songbook favorites from New Orleans and The Swing Era bring your lawn chair with songs like: “In the Mood,” “Let’s Call the Whole Thing Off,” “It Had to be You,” “When The Saints go Marchin In,” “Basin Street Blues,” “On the Sunny Side of the Street,” “Bumble Boogie,” and more. The concert is at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 22 at Market Centre Park, 13631 Eureka Road Southgate.

Save the Girls Charity Motorcycle Ride: Sponsored by the Soroptimist International of Trenton Area and Downriver Area with the proceeds going to help domestic violence victims, human trafficking victims and awareness events, and women’s health issues (with the focus on ovarian cancer, cervical cancer, and breast cancer) and other Soroptimist service projects. The ride will take place Saturday, Sept. 9 and begins at Motown Harley-Davidson, 14100 Telegraph Road in Taylor. Check in is from 9:30-11:30 a.m. Kickstands up at 11:45 a.m. The ride will be approximately 50 to 60 miles with police escorts and road captains from HOG. The ride ends back at Motown Harley with music, food, beverages, raffle baskets, 50/50 tickets. There will be a special raffle for a fire pit with four wicker chairs.The cost is $25 per rider, $10 per passenger, and $10 for a non-rider for a meal ticket only. Food Safety Demo: Lincoln Park Farmers Market will host a Food Safety event with a demo on the importance of cutting boards in preventing food contamination at the Sunday, Aug. 6 market at 1:30 p.m., at the market location of Mellus Park. Mellus Park is on the east side of Fort Street between Arlington & O’Connor in downtown Lincoln Park. Free cutting boards, scrub brushes and lettuce knives will be available. Stop Motion Animation Workshop: Taylor Community Library, Taylor. Aug. 14, from 4:30-5:30 p.m. Every participant will build their very own custom, stop-motion puppet and bring it to life using the art, and the magic of stop-motion animation. Participants can choose from a variety of puppet templates or create one of their own! Participants will work together to create a series of animated scenes that follow the theme of Kindness and Friendship! Includes a free DVD of all the animations for each participant. Naloxone Training: Rotary Club of Southgate is holding Naloxone training classes teaching participants how to give Naloxone at 6 p.m. on Aug. 23 at Downriver YMCA, 15777 Northline, Southgate. Living with Alzheimer’s Late Stage (Part 1 of 2): Taylor Community Library, Taylor. Aug. 23, from 6-7 p.m. In the late stages of Alzheimer’s disease, caregiving typically involves new ways of connecting and interacting with the person with the disease. Join us for this 2-part series and hear from caregivers and professionals about resources, monitoring care and providing meaningful connection for the person with late-stage Alzheimer’s and their families. Hike in the Airport Natural Area: Every Sunday through October, enter at 28820 East River Rd, Grosse Ile, from 1-4 p.m. Grosse Ile Nature & Land Conservancy hosts will be available to open the trails of the Airport Natural Area every Sunday from May to October. Huron River Fishing Association: General meetings are held the first Monday of each month at 6:30 p.m. in the Flat Rock Community Center, 1 McGuire St. in Flat Rock. The general meetings include seminars and speakers related to river fishing, fly fishing, ecological concerns and environmental concerns. Crafters Welcome: Crafters meet every Thursday from 10-11:45 a.m. in the social hall of St. Cyprian Catholic Church on Pennsylvania Rd, Riverview. We knit, crochet and sew a variety of items such as hats and scarves for all ages, baby items, lap blankets, quilts, stuffed toys, dishcloths, and adult bibs just to name a few to donate to local groups who support those in need such at our veterans, soup kitchen clients, a local hospice and the homeless.

American Flag Disposal: Heart to Heart Hospice of Southgate is a local site for American Flag disposal. From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, Heart to Heart will allow the general public to bring their tired and worn American flags to our Southgate office. Genealogy Research: The Downriver Genealogical Society Library, located at 28639 Division Street in Flat Rock, is free and open for genealogy research Tuesdays from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The society began in 1980 and for the past 42 years has been collecting information on the people and cities of the downriver communities, most taken from local newspapers. There are also resources from the surrounding areas and for other states and other countries. Volunteers are available to help those wanting to begin researching their own family. Mental Illness Support Group: For relatives and friends of the mentally Ill in the Downriver area meets the 2nd Wednesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Dearborn, 600 N.Brady, in Mitchell Hall. Another support group meets on the 3rd Wednesday of each month at 10 a.m., at the Henry Ford Wyandotte Hospital’s Rehabilitation Bldg. on the 2nd floor, room 232. Seamstresses Needed: Seasons Hospice and Palliative Care is seeking volunteer seamstresses to help with the making of memory bears. Memory Bears are made from the clothing that once belonged to a loved one and can bring comfort and peace for grieving family members. All materials are provided. Palliative Care Volunteers Needed: Seasons Hospice and Palliative Care is seeking compassionate people to provide volunteer support to terminally ill patients and their families. Heart to Heart Hospice Volunteers needed: Heart to Heart Hospice is looking for downriver community members to join the group’s team of volunteers, who will visit with patients on a weekly or bi-weekly basis to help increase their quality of life during their finals days. Visits can provide friendship, compassion and distraction from their prognosis. Activities that clients might enjoy are being read to, watching television together, talking about who and where they’ve been, their families, hearing about your day, playing cards, and so much more. Great Lakes Steel Salaried Retirees Club: Meets every third Monday at Crystal Gardens, 16703 Fort St. Southgate. Doors open at noon. Lunch promptly at 1 p.m. Cost $12 for members, $13 non-members.
